WHAT TO DO WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG

1. KEEP A POSITIVE ATTITUDE

When everything seems to be going wrong, it can be very easy to want to give up and give in to despair. There are days when all you want to do is crawl up in bed and forget the world around you, and although this may temporarily fix your problem, it does not make it go away because when you awaken, your troubles are there – waiting.

On the other hand, a positive attitude will help keep you going even on the darkest days. In a study conducted by ResearchGate, it was shown that people who have a positive attitude when going through rough times in life had an overall higher score and better experience with leisure and important activities.

2. PRAY OR MEDITATE

One of the crucial things to remember when everything is going wrong is to pray or meditate. You don’t have to be religious to do it, too. It just helps to talk to a higher power, a greater force, the universe – whatever it is that you are comfortable with. The best thing about this is that you can do it anywhere at any time and no one has to know. It is therapeutic and it will give you some perspective, at the very least – or some peace of mind over whatever is troubling you.

Meditation and/or prayer is also good because it keeps you grounded in your faith and helps you to keep fighting whatever it is that is holding you down.

3. WORK TOWARDS MAKING THINGS RIGHT

When everything goes wrong in your life it can be so easy to want to give up but the best thing you can do for yourself is to work towards making things right. In most cases, when things are going wrong, there is usually a reason behind it – financial, romantic, emotional, or otherwise. The best thing you can do for yourself is to start making active changes to remedy your situation; start applying to jobs, go out on dates, take care of yourself – do things every day that will help you to eventually get your life back on track.

4. ACCEPT YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES

Accepting that you are going through a hard time is a great way to keep your faith when everything is going wrong as opposed to denying your circumstances. When you accept that you are going through what you are going through, it becomes easy to find ways to deal with your situation. As they say, the first step to healing is acceptance. Accepting the situation you are in will put you in the right mindset to start working towards remedying whatever it is that has you feeling down and lost.

5. START OVER

When everything keeps going wrong, the best thing you can do for yourself is to take a step back, reflect, and start over. By starting over, you are given the chance to learn from your past mistakes and start afresh with new ideas and people. Starting over is great for any situation that you can find yourself in, it is like a reset button you can press for your convenience.

6. REVEL IN THE SIMPLE PLEASURES OF LIFE

Sometimes, everything that could go wrong, goes wrong. It is important in such times to pause and simply be, take pleasure in the things that bring you little joys such as; your pet, nature, your family, or anything else that brings you little pleasure throughout your day. These little things will build up and make up for the biggest things and they will help you be grateful for everything that is going right in your life at the moment.

7. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

Whenever something good happens, we always rush to pamper and spoil ourselves. Why can’t we do the same when things have gone wrong? Instead of wallowing in self-pity, why not take care of yourself? Take yourself out to dinner, go for a walk, a jog, order in your favorite food, hang out with your favorite people, see a movie, go shopping, shop online, visit your family, go on an impromptu vacation… whatever you do, make sure you are doing it for yourself and to make yourself feel better in the midst of everything else going on in your life that you may perceive as wrong or not going according to plan. Things always work out and as you wait for them to resolve, treat yourself in the meantime.

8. TALK TO SOMEONE

When you feel like things always go wrong for you, it is important to talk to someone whom you trust to get a fresh perspective on your situation. This could be a therapist or a trusted friend or a family member. Things are usually ten times worse in your head and talking to someone else will help you see a fresh perspective and even lower the challenges because they are not as bad as you think they are. Talking to someone will also help with the anxiety that comes with having your life fall apart – a problem shared is a problem half solved. So go ahead, call up your best friend and talk over some cheap wine and a whole lotta snacks. You will feel so much better when you are done.

9. FOCUS ON EVERYTHING THAT IS GOING RIGHT

When things are going wrong in your life, it is easy to despair and think that everything in your life is going wrong and there are no good things left to hold on to. This is false because your brain is only highlighting things that are wrong that may seem bigger than they are leaving you overlooking all the things that are going well in your life. You have good health, a job, a roof over your head, money in your bank account, sound mental health, and a family that loves you very much. These are things you should be focusing on, the more you focus on the good things, the more things will start to seem very bright and optimistic and pretty soon you will be wondering when did everything go so right?!

10. ASK FOR HELP

Asking for help is one of the things that look wrong but is absolutely right and sometimes even necessary. Asking for help does not make you weak or needy, in fact, it makes you strong and brave. When you need people and can call upon them, that is strength. Whatever it is you are going through, always ask for help when you need it, from friends or family. If you need them to look after your kids, your pets, your home while you get away, or if you need some money to land on your feet, or if you need someone to simply listen to you – ask for help. Your mental health will thank you for it when everything starts going well again. There is absolutely no reason why you should go through hard times alone.

11. IT’S ALWAYS DARKEST BEFORE THE DAWN

When you feel like everything is bad and you can’t stop thinking “what’s wrong with my life?” it is paramount to remember that the worst things come just before the best things arrive – it’s always darkest before the dawn. You are almost at the finish line, and the light is just around the corner. Keep on fighting. Remember that whatever situation you are going through, it will pass.

12. SHOW GRATITUDE

When everything in your life is going wrong, you should always remember to show gratitude for the things that you have that are going right. Show gratitude to both the negative and positive things going on in your life, because the negative situations are what makes you strong and give you long-lasting life lessons that are valuable. There is a silver lining in every bad situation and you need to be thankful for that. Always show gratitude no matter what you are going through.

13. DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE SELF TALK

Another way to keep your faith when everything is going wrong is to talk positively to yourself and ignore the little voice in your head that says all the negative things about you and your situation. When you pay attention to the negative self-talk, you only dig yourself further down a rabbit hole of pain, anger, despair, and depression. When that little voice starts telling you that nothing is going to be alright ever again, mention all the things that are going right in that moment, show it all the things you have accomplished, remember your plans for the future, and make it shut up by affirming yourself.

14. FORGIVE

Forgiveness helps us let go of anger, shame, guilt, and other burdens we are holding onto when a person (or group of people) does us wrong. If things in your life are going wrong because someone caused it, the best thing you can do for yourself is to forgive them because by doing so you are freeing yourself from the burden of holding onto negative energy because of someone else. Forgiveness, is, for the most part, something that you do for yourself more than the other person.

15. JOURNAL

When you feel like everything is going wrong lately, take a step back and write down exactly what you believe is going wrong. Journaling gives you direction and focuses on what is going wrong and how you can fix it. If there is a pattern you can recognize, there is a remedy for it and journaling can help you notice this more effectively. On the other hand, journaling will also help you express your deepest emotions without fear of being judged by others over your fears, hopes, and dreams. Like Anne Frank said, “paper is more patient than man”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What should I do when everything is going wrong?

When everything is going wrong in your life, the first thing to remember is that not everything is going wrong in your life. There are still things you can hold on to that are going very well and are having a positive impact on your life – do not lose sight of that.

However, some of the things you can do when you are feeling that your life is falling apart, meditate, show gratitude, talk to someone, ask for help, and most importantly, know that your situation – no matter how dark and hopeless it may seem – is only temporary. Here is an article on how to remain positive in difficult times to help you through.

2. Why everything goes wrong at the same time?

As the saying goes, bad news comes in threes – when bad things start happening, it seems like the bad keeps coming with no end in sight and it is very easy to want to give up or lose yourself in the thick of it all. However, as another wise saying goes – it’s always darkest before dawn. When things seem to be going wrong with no end in sight, just know that the worst is over and the best is yet to come. Do not lose hope, and always keep fighting. You are stronger than you know.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, when everything seems to be going wrong, it is important to not lose sight of all the things that are going right in your life. There is more to be grateful for than there is to be worried about. Always try to see the good things happening in your life and the silver linings even in the worst of situations.
