You need to go out there and try new things to discover what piques your interest and touches your soul, what will make you feel a sense of fulfilment, joy, and happiness.
Before we start on discussing how to live life to the fullest after 50, it is a good idea to first do an exercise to help clarify your purpose by writing down the following:
- What are your values – what are the things you believe are valuable, important, or acceptable to you?
- Who you are – what makes you unique?
- What are your strengths – what are you good at?
- What are your achievements – what have you achieved so far in your life?
- What are your goals – what would you still like to achieve or accomplish?
- What are your interests and passions – what do you love to do?
- What is the service you would like to give – how would you like to contribute to your family, your community, or even to a cause that is dear to your heart?
Here are some ways to help you get started:
1. Change your perspective and stay positive.
When you are trying to find a purpose to your life after 50, it is easy to become discouraged when you know you have a challenge ahead of you but you have no idea how to resolve it. This does not mean that there isn’t a solution and you might not even need a solution in the conventional sense.
You might only need a change in perspective that can be something positive, it can be beneficial or add to your life. For instance, if you see your life after 50 as a time of growth, change, and enrichment, it will be just that or if you search for happiness in the right places and the way, you will create it.
2. Keep your mind in the present.
It is never a good thing to dwell in the past as there’s little to be gained by dissecting the past or speculating about your future could be. If you spend your time in the future or the past it may have a negative effect on your life as you might end up missing out on what is happening right now. There is only one time and place where you can be and have any control over and that is to learn to live more in the present moment.
3. Figure out what you are missing in your life
Think about your life at the moment then picture your ideal life and figure out what the things are that you feel you are missing. Think about the things that you really want and find a solution.
There are many ways that you can substitute for what you’re missing, like maybe if you never had children because your career came first and now you feel that you are too old to start, you could become a foster parent or do some volunteering work that involves helping children.
4. Set new goals for yourself
As we grow older life changes and so does our goals. Set yourself some new realistic goals that excite you and see them through. Look at what you want to achieve, then work your way back to the present and take your first step today.
You must first know where you want to go to then you can figure out how to get there. An example would be if you want to lose a certain amount of weight, then your first step would be to join a gym and work on losing that weight.
To make setting your goals easier for you, you can break them down into a list of daily activities that you can perform that will move you closer to that goal at a pace that is comfortable for you. Setting new goals can also help you in finding your passion after 50.
5. Start with your current interests, with what you know and love
Start with the things that you know inspire you, and you love to do. It could be things you are already doing or something you put aside due to changes or circumstances that took place in your life.
If the things that you used to enjoy are not the same things that you enjoy now, then try something that someone you admire likes to do. Give it a try, you might even enjoy it and discover something new about yourself at the same time.
6. Expand your interests and passions
To expand your interests and passions you don’t need to go all out and do something as dramatic as bungee jumping off the side of a cliff. You can use your existing interests and passions, spend time researching and perfecting it and take it to a whole new level if you can which could lead to you doing something completely new, and different.
7. Open your mind to new possibilities and experiences
Open your mind up to all possibilities and experiences. Try to let go of your own opinions and beliefs, especially the opinions you have about yourself and your abilities. Even if you think that these possibilities and experiences are way out of your reach or your comfort zone. You never know, you may find purpose in life after 50 in the most unexpected places.
Try to challenge yourself by doing something new each week or each month. Take cooking lessons, painting dancing, or a singing class and stick with it, don’t give up too soon. Once you have learned the basics, you may realize that you learned something new and now have an entirely new hobby that you never would have considered before.
8. Pay attention to the things that inspire you.
Think about and pay attention to the things that inspire you and compels you to get up and take action as these are the things that will help you make a difference in your life, they will make you happy and when you are happy then you will have purpose and meaning to your life. Look at the world around you and draw inspiration from the things you read, the news, movies and the people in your life as well as those that inspire you.
For some more inspiration go outside and turn to nature as almost anyone can gain inspiration from nature. If you walk around and explore and enjoy the things around you, it can encourage creativity and gives you a peace-of-mind so that you will feel more relaxed and calm and will be able to make important decisions clearly.
If you need some more ideas to find sources of inspiration, try these:
- Travel to unusual and different places with different cultures. Interact with the locals and learn all about them, their town or country.
- Go to art or photography exhibitions and admire the beauty in the paintings or photos.
- Go to new restaurants and try different types of cuisines that you have never eaten before.
- Read some interesting blogs, websites, and forums that give some useful information. You can also read books on finding your purpose.
- Draw inspiration from Pinterest which is filled with thousands of ideas and information.
- Socialize with different and new people and learn new and interesting things from them.

9. Avoid giving up on yourself.
